Get ready for the holidays

With friends and family coming to stay over the summer holidays, redecorating the spare room suddenly became priority. Fortunately, with the best shopping in Albany, the Albany Lifestyle Centre, just around the corner, it was an easy to do it all in just one weekend.

My brother and his family are coming for Christmas and, a few days later, our friends from Christchurch are popping up. The spare bedroom’s been in need of a makeover and I started a few months back but quickly lost the enthusiasm for it. With holiday guests only weeks away, it had to be done this weekend.

I kicked Saturday off at my favourite store, Mitre 10 MEGA, looking for the painting essentials – drop sheets, a new roller, masking tape and 10 litres of Resene lo-sheen paint. I went for a light-grey colour that will work well with the dark grey carpets in the room.

It took me about three hours to paint the whole room including taping up all the window edges and skirtings. I was pleased how quickly the walls dried and by late afternoon I was able to paint the final coat. First thing in the morning, I put the curtain rods back on the wall and finally put up the new curtains my wife made for the room six months ago. Already the room was looking better.

We spent an enjoyable late Sunday morning browsing the stores around the Albany Lifestyle Centre. So many great things to look at, making it hard for us to focus on just the essentials we need for the spare room. Beds, in particular, were hard to decide upon, given the many options. We settled on a simple queen size slat bed. We then found the most stunning Annie Button Headboard at The Design Store, and matched this with designer bedside tables.

Our final stop was at 100% Albany Extreme Appliances. I know my brother loves to watch TV in bed so a TV on the wall at the end of the bed was essential. The sales person was excellent, talking us through the many features and options and giving us good practical advice. We settled on a Panasonic 40" Full HD LED Smart TV and a wall-mounting kit.

Back home and a few more hours of assembling and then putting the TV on the wall. My wife added her stylish finishing touches like pictures on the wall, ornaments, cushions and throws. By late Sunday we were done and the room looks fantastic. I felt a great sense of satisfaction at getting it all done in just one weekend.

I couldn’t have done it if everything wasn’t so easily located at the Albany Lifestyle Centre. Makes me wonder why I didn’t do it earlier!
