Restart with a home makeover

The kids leaving the nest is a great time for a fresh start, to rediscover your personal style and to redecorate your home. The Albany Lifestyle Centre is the perfect place for inspiration and for everything you need for kids-free home makeovers.

At the start of the year, Sam moved down to Otago to study medicine. He is my youngest and the last of my three boys to leave home. Just me and my husband is the new reality.

I decided this was an opportunity to start afresh so I popped down to the Albany Lifestyle Centre to find inspiration. It didn’t take long and when Jack, my husband, got home that evening I told him the plan. “We’ll turn Sam’s room into an office, Jayden’s room into a guest room and the rumpus into a movie room.” Jack looked confused but knows better than to argue when I’m this determined.

We started with the new office. First stop was Mitre 10 MEGA for paint. I chose a smoky colour called Mesmerise to add a bit of sophistication to the room. It goes well with our red oak wood floors and is offset nicely by deep red curtains. Freedom Furniture had everything we needed including a Stationers trestle-desk, a white Jesse office chair, a book shelf and a set of white stainless-steel draws. It better work out for Sam in Otago because there’s no coming back to his room now!

Jayden’s room didn’t need so much work. We’d painted it only a few years earlier and it had a relatively new bed suite. We needed a new mattress and a few accessories. Fortunately the Albany Lifestyle Centre has multiple bed places. We found a really comfortable Oasis Queen inner-sprung mattress at The Bed People and an excellent deep green throw at Hunter Furniture. At The Design Store we purchased a round XX Elizabeth mirror by Design@Home, a set of Barnaby bedside lamps and a stunning Crystal Ashley Fantail print. The room is transformed and a place where visitors will feel at home. Hopefully it will encourage the kids to come stay more often.

And the final room was the theatre room. Naturally we painted it a dark charcoal colour. I took Jack with me to 100% Albany Extreme Appliances where he decided on the LG 86inch 4K LED TV and the Wharfedale Home theatre system. Last stop was Danske Møbler for a couple of Stressless Leather Recliners. We chose them in a bright red.

The house is looking amazing. It’s funny how a rethink of your home and a makeover of a few rooms can feel like a fresh new start. Everything we needed was in one place – the Albany Lifestyle Centre - making it so super easy. Now I’m thinking about a makeover for the rest of the house. “Jack, I think we should redecorate…..”
